Bee Farming on Your Telangana Farm Plot

4 min read

Most plot owners near Hyderabad think of their land as one crop, one income. Bee boxes take almost no extra space, and if you grow mango, guava, sunflower or red gram, the bees help that crop too. Here is what a setup looks like by plot size, what the subsidy actually covers, and what honey really sells for.

Why bees fit a farm plot

Bees forage across a 2 to 3 km radius, so what flowers around your plot matters as much as your own land. The boxes themselves need only a shaded corner with water nearby.

The bigger win is pollination. A 2023 study on 16 mango farms around Bengaluru found that when insects could reach the flowers, yield was about 3.5 times higher than on bagged flowers. Farms with more bees also showed around 20% better fruit set (Journal of Applied Ecology). Placing boxes in your orchard during the December to February mango bloom puts that effect to work. The exact gain depends on your trees, variety and how much you spray, so treat it as a boost, not a fixed number.

One warning: insecticide sprays during flowering kill bees and, in the same study, cut mango fruit weight by almost 30%. If you keep bees, spray only bee-safe products, and only in the evening.

Setup by plot size

NABARD puts a 50-colony unit with hives and equipment at roughly Rs 2.2 to 2.5 lakh, which works out to about Rs 4,500 to 5,000 per box (source). Costs below are before subsidy.

Plot size

Boxes

Setup cost (Rs)

Best fit

Under 1 acre

10 to 15

50,000 to 75,000

Trial year, mixed fruit trees, kitchen garden

1 to 5 acres

20 to 50

1 lakh to 2.5 lakh

Mango, guava, sapota orchards; sunflower or red gram

5 acres and above

50 to 100

2.5 lakh to 5 lakh

Commercial honey plus orchard pollination

What a basic setup needs:

  • Langstroth hive boxes with Italian bee (Apis mellifera) colonies. Indian bees give only 6 to 8 kg a year, Italian bees far more (NABARD model).

  • Stands with water cups on the legs to stop ants.

  • One kit: smoker, veil, gloves, hive tool and a honey extractor.

  • Sugar syrup for feeding in the April to June summer gap and heavy monsoon weeks, when little is flowering.

  • A short training course before you buy. Under NBHM, beekeeper training is 100% government funded.

Subsidy: what you actually get

In Telangana, the Horticulture Department is the nodal agency for the National Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM). There are two routes.

Scheme

Subsidy

Limits

NBHM

50% for individual farmers, societies and firms

Applied through Telangana Horticulture

MIDH (horticulture mission)

40% of cost

Cost norm Rs 2,000 per colony and Rs 2,000 per hive; max 50 colonies and 50 hives per person

Sources: Telangana Horticulture, NBHM page, MIDH cost norms.

The catch: subsidy is calculated on the government cost norm, not your bill. For 20 boxes under MIDH, the norm is Rs 80,000, so you get Rs 32,000 even if you actually spend Rs 1 lakh. NABARD does not hand out the subsidy directly. It works through bank loans, and the horticulture department's subsidy work order helps you get that loan.

Eligibility checklist:

  • Own land, or land on a registered lease.

  • Registration on the National Bee Board's Madhukranti portal.

  • Application at your district horticulture office with Aadhaar, pattadar passbook or lease deed, and bank details.

  • Buy colonies only from NBB-registered breeders, or the purchase may not qualify.

NBHM was extended only up to FY 2025-26. Before you buy anything, confirm with the district horticulture officer that funds are open for 2026-27.

Honey market: where the money is

Selling in bulk earns little. Selling your own bottled honey is where the margin sits.

Around 70% of India's honey is exported, and about three quarters of those exports go to the US (CivilsDaily). APEDA's March 2026 outlook marked Indian export prices as bearish (APEDA), so bulk traders have little reason to pay more. Farm-gate rates average Rs 145 to 155 per kg, while multiflora honey retails at Rs 220 to 550 and single-flower honeys like eucalyptus or jamun go higher (price guide).

Indians still eat only about 37 g of honey a year per person, so the home market has room to grow. A Hyderabad buyer will pay for a clear story: "mango blossom honey from our own farm in Shadnagar."

Income from 20 boxes, assuming 20 to 30 kg per box in Telangana's drier conditions:

Sales route

Price (Rs per kg)

Yearly income (Rs)

Bulk to traders

150

60,000 to 90,000

Own brand, bottled

350

1.4 lakh to 2.1 lakh, before bottling costs

Year one usually comes in lower while colonies build up. Selling packed honey also needs an FSSAI registration. Beeswax adds a few thousand more.

Before you start

Start with 10 to 20 boxes, learn one full season, then grow toward the 50-box subsidy limit. Bees work best as a second income on land you already farm, not as a replacement for it. If your plot sits near orchards or sunflower fields, you are already ahead.
